Region: Boysen Reservoir, Central Wyoming

When I was in training as a US Marine (Amphib/Recon/UDT), my boat team and I were out on an inflatable boat (called an IBS) when 2 sea kayakers passed us about 300 yards off our stern.  We were in some large, rough swells and holding our position, awaiting a signal from land, and I remember thinking about how effortless the kayaks seemed to move, as opposed to the constant correcting and coordination it took all 7 of us to control our boat! Skip ahead about 43 more years ...and the memory of those 2 kayakers never left me.

So I told my wife Anna I'd like to try kayaking, and she bought us two new kayaks (as a birthday present for me). I got into the sport of kayaking, starting right then. Far later in life than I should have! But I swallowed the activity, hook, line, and sinker, and since that time I have made a point to get on the water 3-6 times a week whenever the water is not frozen over. (Frozen water is a given in Wyoming winters.)

I've bought and used 59 different kayaks and sold 49 of them in the last 7 years. When I first bought a TRAK kayak, I saw a combination of performance features that no other kayak I have ever used possessed, and in a short time I decided I wanted to share these kayaks and these activities with as many people as I can, in what ever time I have left to live.  As a 70 year old man now, that is not hyperbole, but a fact.

In my time as a kayaker, I have tried to build skills to a point I can teach them to others, and pass on the joys and excitement of sea kayaking to everyone I can. (Even inland as opposed to accessing the ocean. ) That passion has proven to be a great blessing, not just to those that have learned and loved the sport, but to me also, having known the blessing of being able to share it. I teach a "kayakers kindergarten" class and have brought quite a number of new paddlers into the sport, which has brought me such joy.  I intend to keep spreading that joy until God calls me home.

So now I not only use a TRAK myself, but I recommend them very highly, and I try as often as I can to teach others how to use them and enjoy them whenever possible. Personally I've used them on fairly flat water all the way to breakers that were well above my head level, and from calm conditions to winds of 40 MPH+, and I have found the TRAK fully capable of performing through all the challenges I have put it through.

I am hopeful I can spread this knowledge and enjoyment to many other people. That is my goal now. I started out as a young child and now I am an old man, but I would love to share my love and passion for kayaking with anyone who would like to also come to know the joys it has brought to me.

A custom cockpit is easier (and more important) than you think.

A custom cockpit is easier (and more important) than you think.

As good as any kayak is, it's how well it fits you - your connection to the kayak - that makes it exceptional.

We often hear that the paddle doesn't roll a kayak, we do. The same applies to turning the kayak. We, the paddler, are directly connected to the kayak and it's our body movement which provides the control.

The better the fit, the better the control, and therefore, the better the...

Plane. Paddle. Paradise: Last-Minute Escape to the Bahamas

With roughly a week's notice, a TRAK 2.0, a pair of paddles, and a willingness to improvise, I turned an ordinary week into a spontaneous escape to Great Exuma, Bahamas. It was a reminder of what folding expedition kayaks do best: remove logistical barriers, make last-minute travel possible, and transform...
