"Then to the Aeolian isle we came, where dwelt Aeolus, son of Hippotas, dear to the immortal gods, in a floating island, and all around it is a wall of unbreakable bronze, and the cliff runs up sheer.”

- Odyssey, Book X, verse 1

Embark on a mythical journey across the Aeolian archipelago: the islands home to the son of Zeus, Aeolus, the Greek God of the winds, and to Hephaestus (Vulcanus for the Romans), who owns his workshop on the active volcano of the island of the same name.

Discover the marvellous nature and sea surrounding them, discovering caves, cliffs, secret beaches and remote towns.

Enjoy the local food and products: from the notable sweet wine made with Malvasia delle Lipari, to the famous capers from Salina, and the many dishes prepared with them.

A unique experience paddling around the islands: unleashing the unique strength of the TRAK kayak, to easily hop between the islands and visit the most peculiar places they have to offer.

Flight Information

To reach the Aeolian Islands, fly to a nearby major city in Italy and then take a ferry, hydrofoil, or private helicopter service to the islands. The most common approach is to fly into Catania or Palermo in Sicily, then travel to the port of Milazzo to catch a ferry to the islands.

Meet your guides

Luca Ferroglio

Born and raised in Italy, life brought Luca to the Netherlands some years ago, where he currently lives and works.

Luca's love for the outdoors and water (and an idea from his girlfriend!) inspired him to try kayaking for the first time during the dark years of the pandemic. Not even a couple of months later, he was already taking lessons to improve his skills, and searching for his very own kayak. TRAK turned out to be the perfect boat for Luca: he wanted something he could use on Dutch rivers and channels, or bring with me on his frequent trips to Sicily to explore its beautiful coasts and islands. Since then Luca has continued his training to become an expedition guide.

Luca is passionate about paddling and loves to share his enthusiasm for the TRAK kayak. He is always happy to meet other passionate kayakers, hear and share experiences, and especially to share insights on how to get the best out of their beautiful folding kayaks and unleash freedom on the water!

Eugenio started kayaking as a teenager, exploring the wild waters of the Strait of Messina. In 1994, he bought his first true sea kayak and set off on a 44-day solo expedition around Sicily, inspired by Bernard Moitessier and his book, The Long Way. That journey marked a turning point in Eugenio's life. In the years that followed, he embarked on many other solo adventures: around Sardinia, Corsica, the Peloponnese, Crete, Dalmatia, and more.

In 2001, Eugenio founded Sicily in Kayak, earning certifications to teach the art of sea kayaking. Since then, he's never stopped learning, training with both the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation (F.I.C.K.) and British Canoeing (B.C.), constantly improving his skills and knowledge.

In 2009, Eugenio fulfilled a lifelong dream by moving to the Aeolian Islands, where he passionately teaches sea kayaking techniques and guides both tourists and students in discovering the hidden gems of these magnificent islands. Together with his team, Eugenio leads unforgettable experiences by sea kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and sail around the Aeolian archipelago.

What you'll learn:

Itinerary:

Day 0: Welcome to Vulcano!

Our journey begins in the evening: we will meet on Sunday, to get to know each other and discuss about the details of the following days

Day 1: Getting to the water (6 nmi)

We will start with the kayak assembly, and go through the most important topic when paddling: safety!
We will talk about group management, and navigation at sea with a kayak

We will then explore the East coast of Vulcano; you can expect to paddle along wild and practically untouched cliffs and caves.

In the afternoon, we'll have time to visit the active volcano of the island.

Day 2: Tour of Vulcano (13 nmi)

Time to circumnavigate the second largest island: we'll leave from the East beach, and navigate south along the wild East coast. We'll reach the small town and beach of Gelso for a well deserved break, before continuing North along the West coast, to complete the tour.

Day 3: Tour of Salina (12 nmi)

We'll take the hydrofoil in the morning, to reach Santa Marina di Salina. From there, we will paddle around the third largest island, but one of the most populated ones.

From the water, we will see vineyards, and capers fields, and the highest mountain of the archipelago. Once in Pollara, we will visit the location famous for the movie "Il Postino".

A stop in Leni to savour the famous Granita di Ricotta, and then back to Santa Marina, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 4: Tour of Stromboli (9 nmi)

The island is famous for its continuous volcanic activity: every few minutes one can see the eruptions from the crater. The phenomenon is so peculiar, to give name to a specific type of eruptions, strombolian indeed.

We'll reach the island with the hydrofoil, before paddling around the islet of Strombolicchio, and then reaching the "Sciara del Fuoco" to enjoy the view of the paroxysmic events.
We will then spend the night on the island, and enjoy its unique vibe.

Day 5: Tour of Lipari (22 nmi)

The most exciting day for paddling! We will reach Lipari in the morning with the hydrofoil, and will start circumnavigating the largest island of the archipelago.

The East coast hosts a number of small towns, besides the city of Lipari, the "capital" of the archipelago. We will see beautiful beaches, and get almost blinded by the shining white caves of pumice stone.

After a lunch break in Acquacalda, our tour will continue along the much wilder West coast.

Our tour will then end in Vulcano, after crossing the strait between the two islands.

In the evening, to recover from this long but exciting day, we'll have dinner at one of the nicest restaurants of Vulcano.
